This trade is a follow-up to the earlier deals involving Fox and Lavine, with Sissoko and Denver's second-round picks acquired through this three-team transaction. A significant aspect of the deal was moving Huerter to Chicago, which enabled Sacramento to absorb Valanciunas' salary without luxury tax concerns.
The decision not to utilize their cap space flexibility for Tre Jones (who went to Chicago in the Fox trade) indicates that Sacramento prioritizes frontcourt reinforcements over finding a traditional point guard replacement for Fox. With Lavine, Monk, DeRozan, and rookie Devon Carter on board, they have sufficient ball handlers but lack size off the bench.
The 2.11-meter tall Valanciunas brings much-needed heft; previously they had been using Trey Lyles (at just 2.06 meters) as Sabonis’ backup despite him being more of a power forward by nature.
Although primarily seen as an interior scorer or offensive rebounder option, he has also excelled as an effective roll man in pick-and-roll situations. According to tracking data from Second Spectrum over the last six seasons, only six centers have executed more ball screen actions than Valanciunas—Sabonis included.
